For example, when a viewer tunes to the 3.0 feed on an NBC station, their 3.0-enabled Smart TV will display a button onscreen providing the option to Restart the current program from the beginning.

The button they see is a web app provided by NBC that is running on the Run3TV application framework. When clicked, that button tells the framework to tear down the linear broadcast stream, launch the OTT stream and start playback from the beginning.

Program Restart is one example of the many different ways that broadcasters, networks, content providers and advertisers can improve the viewing experience.

Addressability enables more relevant content and advertising to be delivered to each individual device or group of devices. “Linear Addressability" refers to the replacement of a broadcast ad with an ad selected for certain TVs. For example, Ford may want to deliver ads for trucks, SUVs, or sedans to different groups of viewers. Small retailers may want to run ads only in nearby neighborhoods. There are many ways to improve the value provided to advertisers with addressability.

Addressability can also be used to deliver content. For example, in Los Angeles, different parts of town have very different needs for traffic information. A user-selectable application can show people in the San Fernando Valley what traffic looks like in their area, while viewers on the West Side really care more about the 405, and so forth.
